BJYM President, Sh. Anurag Thakur regarding condemning the attack on Sh. Sharad Pawar

BJYM National President Sh. Anurag Thakur condemned the attack on Union Cabinet Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar. He said, that “such violence has no place in a democracy”. Thakur said, “even though the means of expression were undemocratic, the incident reflects the anger and frustration of millions of ordinary Indians with high inflation and food prices”.

Sh. Thakur said that while Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was busy urging the people of UP to be “gussa” with the non- performance of the state government during his campaign for upcoming elections in the state, he as well as the Congress leadership have failed to realize the “gussa” of the common man against the Congress led Central government.

Sh. Thakur said, “the incident should serve as a reminder for the Congress party of people’s disillusionment with the current state of affairs”. He blamed the Congress led UPA government of being unresponsive to and out of touch with the sentiments of the common man.

“The incident of Congress Ministers thrashing protesting youth demonstrating against Rahul Gandhi in Phulpur is an example of the divergence between the Congress and the aamadmi” Thakur said. He said that “violence is unacceptable in a democracy, but people’s voices should be heard”.

Smt. Sushma Swaraj and Shri Arun Jaitley on Government’s proposal to introduce FDI in retail sector

Joint Statement issued by Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha)
and Shri Arun Jaitley, Leader of Opposition (Rajya Sabha)
On Government’s proposal to introduce FDI in retail sector

The Bharatiya Janata Party is opposed to the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) being introduced in the Retail sector. The Indian economy, at present, is dominated by the Services sector. The Services sector account for 58 percent of India’s GDP. The retail chains in India, both small and big, account for a major segment of the Services sector. Self-employment in India is the single largest source of jobs. An overwhelming section of India’s population is self-employed. Foreign Direct Investment with deep pockets entering this segment will have an adverse impact on our domestic retail sector, which is growing.

The consumer choices require markets to be fragmented rather than consolidated. Fragmented markets give larger options to the consumers. Consolidated markets make the consumer captive. No one player should be allowed to dominate the market. Allowing foreign players, with deep pockets, enable such a consolidation. It will sweep aside competition and involve a loss of jobs, both in the manufacturing and services sector. These jobs will be lost in the name of eliminating middlemen. Jobs in the retail sector will obviously be lost. Jobs in the manufacturing sector will be lost because structured international retail makes purchases internationally and not from domestic sources. This experience has been felt in most countries which have allowed FDI in retail. International retail players operate on buying at the lowest and selling at the highest prices. They indulge in predatory pricing, which initially eliminates competition and eventually creates monopolies. This can result food chains of large nations being controlled foreign organizations. The number of retail establishments as at present gets substantially reduced in favour of large establishments. International retail does not create additional markets, it merely displaces existing market.

The argument that India needs a supply chain in order to help the farm sector and only foreign players can supply the same is to be rejected. India needs infrastructure for carrying farmers’ produce to the consumers. This has to be done in the most efficient and cheapest manner. International retail players have no role in the building of roads, both rural and urban or generating power. They are required to create storage facilities and cold chains. Why can’t the same be done by the governments in India, both central and states. Are you going to handover our food supplies to foreign hands merely because governments have failed to create cold chains?

The comparison between India and China in allowing international retails players is misplaced. China is predominantly a manufacturing economy. It is the largest supplier to Walmart and other international majors. It generates huge number of manufacturing jobs by being such a supplier. It obviously cannot say ‘No’ to these chains to open stores in China when it is global supplier to them. India on the contrary will lose both manufacturing and service sector jobs.

MAIN POINTS OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE OF SHRI L. K. ADVANI AT MUMBAI (MAHARASHTRA)

MAIN POINTS OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE OF
SHRI L. K. ADVANI AT MUMBAI (MAHARASHTRA)

  • Apart from corruption the issue of black money particularly huge amount stashed away in foreign banks including in Swiss Banks, has deeply disturbed and distressed the people of the country. There anger I have myself noticed in the course of my Jan Chetna yatra where in I have covered 15 states and 1 Union Territory. In all the yatra will go to 23 states and 5 Union Territories in a span of 38 days covering a road distance of 7600 KM.

  • Since a long time I have been demanding that the Government must come out with a white paper as regards the step it has taken to bring back this money which, in majority of the cases is the product of crime and corruption. There is complete silence from the Government. Today I would like to raise certain important questions which the Government must answer –

  1. Powerful countries like USA, Germany, France and even smaller countries like Philippines, Peru and Nigeria have taken a variety of measures to bring back black money parked in foreign bank accounts with great success. Why is the UPA Government not prepared to follow the steps they have taken?

  2. USA, Germany, France and UK have invariably entered into agreements and treaties with Switzerland which help them extract information. USA got information of four thousand account holders form the UBS Bank. Other Countries have also managed to get substantial information.

  3. The nature of agreement which India has entered into is so worded that the Government takes shelter under it to refuse to extract information. This is also prospective giving scope to the defaulters to withdraw their money.

  4. Few months ago the Swiss Ambassador to India publically stated that if the Government of India shows the political will the Swiss Government is willing to cooperate.

  5. India today is an important country of the world and is also a part of the G-20. Presently Dr. Manmohan Singh is attending the G-20 summit in France. Why is India reluctant to assert itself in the light of its rising global stature to recover this dirty money. What is holding back the UPA Government spite of such anger in this country against rank inaction.

  6. When the whole world is proceeding towards openess and disclosure of information, what prevents the Government from disclosing the names of those who have parked this money in foreign banks?

  7. The Government took six years to ratify the U.N. Convention against corruption and invariably the taxation agreements with various countries are being made prospective which will frustrate the very purpose of this exercise.

  • It is learnt that the names of three Member of Parliament also figure in respect of whom income tax authorities are investigating in connection with Swiss Bank accounts. This is a very serious issue. This brings the issue of black money close to the political system and it cannot be dealt with only as a tax evasion issue. Full facts in this connection must be made public.

  • These are important questions and the rank indifference of the Government only shows once again that the UPA Government wants to hide because disclosure will cause embarrassment. The Government lacks the political will.
  • Black money has a direct role to play in the pernicious influence of money power in elections which is becoming very deep rooted. The motto of this Yatra is clean politics and good governance and proper electoral reforms must be initiated to curb the influence of money power. It is essential for democracy.
  • This Yatra is for regeneration of India.

Remembering Sardar Patel - Scrap second flag for Kashmir and form Hindu Shrine Board to protect temples in valley - Tarun Vijay The Accession Day of

Press Statement issued by
BJP National Spokesperson and MP, Shri Tarun Vijay
Remembering Sardar Patel - Scrap second flag for Kashmir and form Hindu Shrine Board to protect temples in valley - Tarun Vijay

The Accession Day of J&K with Bharat report

Remembering Sardar Patel should also mean integrating Kashmir completely with rest of India and protecting Hindu minority rights in valley. Said Shri Tarun Vijay today on the occasion of Sardar Patel's birth anniversary. Shri Tarun Vijay demanded scrapping of the second flag for Kashmir discontinuing the practice of its display along with the national flag Tricolour. He also demanded the formation of a Hindu Shrine Board in the valley to protect the remaining Hindu temples and reconstruct/repair the destroyed temples, which number more than seven hundred. He said that recently Kashmiri pandits under the leadership of Shri Vinod Pandita had sat on hunger strike in Jammu to demand a shrine board for temples. Thousands of acre land belonging to Hindu temples has been encroached upon by dubious people but the state government has not taken any action against the encroachers.

Speaking in a function to observe J&K Accession day earlier Shri Tarun Vijay blamed that ignoring the advice and ideals of Sardar Patel resulted in the creation of Kashmir problem.

Former Governor Shri K.N. Sahani gave vivid details of the J&K's accession and the traumatic incidents following the Pakistani attack in 1947. Shri OP Kohli raised the questions whether the so called Hindu Muslim unity in the state has been a reality ever and why there were no voices in support of the Hindus by valley Muslims. Shri Mahendra Pandey also expressed the anguish of the persecuted minority of the state. Shri T.K. Razdan praised the grit and principled stand of Maharaja Hari Singh and lamented that history has not done justice to his memory. Maharaja was exiled from the state by Pt Nehru govt. to Bombay, from where he never returned to Kashmir, for the 'crime' of merging J&K with India, he said. He accused Pt Nehru to have played in the hands of Sheikh Abdullah and Lord Mountbatten and thus jeopardizing the J&K state's complete merger with rest of India.

J&K Accession day (when Maharaja Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession merging the J&K state with India) was observed in the Kushabhau Thakre auditorium in the BJP Central office, New Delhi. Shri Kidar Nath Sahani, former Governor, Sikkim who had worked relentlessly in J&K and specially in Mirpur area during the traumatic times of Pakistani attack in September 1947, presided over the function. Shri Tarun Vijay, MP and National Spokesperson, BJP was the Chief Guest. Shri O.P. Kohli, former MP and In-charge, BJP Central Office, and Shri Mahendra Pandey, All India In-charge of all BJP Morchas and Cells, were the distinguished guests of honour. A good number of Kashmiri Hindus, residing in New Delhi attended the function. The programme was organised by J&K Sampark Cell, BJP Shri T.N. Razdan veteran Advocate, Supreme Court and the Convener of the Sampark Prakoshth, convened the meeting and Shri Rashneek Kher conducted the programme. Smt Sarala Taploo, wife of the veteran RSS worker in Kashmir Late Shri Tika Lal Taploo, who was murdered by Jihadis, also graced the function.

Statement : Sh L.K. Advani during his Jan Chetna Yatra in Sambalpur (Odisha)

STATEMENT BY SHRI L.K. ADVANI
CHAIRPERSON NDA PARLIAMENTARY PARTY
DURING HIS JAN CHETNA YATRA
SAMBALPUR (ODISHA)

First, I wish to convey my heartfelt thanks to the people of Odisha for the overwhelming support I got last evening from the time my Yatra crossed over from Chhattisgarh. Earlier in the day, the response in Chhattisgarh too was way beyond my expectation. But Odisha surprised me even more because my party is not as strong here as in Chhattisgarh.

The spontaneous turnout all along the route, including Attabira, Bargarh and Sambalpur where I reached four hours behind schedule, conveyed a direct message to me: The people of India are fed up with the unprecedented corruption that is taking place under the UPA regime. They want corruption to end, black money stashed away in foreign banks to be brought back to India, the persons guilty of building a structure of corruption and greed punished and want this immoral UPA Government to go as soon as possible.

***

Anarchy and chaos prevails in the Central Government today.

With every passing day a newer order or decision comes which only aggravates the chaos.

The latest is the new pecking order laid down by the Prime Minister. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee who is also Leader of the Lok Sabha and Home Minister P. Chidambaram have been placed at par.

In the UPA Government, since its formation there has been a question mark over who is No.1 in the Government- the P.M. or the Congress President (there never has been really any doubt over the answer).

Now a question mark has been placed even over who is No.2 ! The Telegraph reports a Cabinet Minister observing : “The Prime Minister has demolished the No.2 myth.”

Added to this, Cabinet Seceretary Ajit Seth has sent an order to Ministers which spells out three specific decisions:

  1. The Prime Minister alone will take key policy decisions.

  2. Defence Minister A.K. Antony is not above Home Minister Chidambaram in matters of governance: and

  3. There is no designated No.2 in Government.

One wonders if the formal promotion of P. Chidambaram to parity status with the Leader of the Lok Sabha is a desperate attempt to thwart a probe against him in the 2G scam after the indictment of the DMK Ministers.

*****

Today, one former Minister and several UPA MPs are behind bars and many more are waiting in the queue outside Tihar Jail. Therefore, we need to bring in systemic changes that ensure clean politics and good governance. My Yatra is aimed at arousing the people to seek their involvement in achieving this mission.

The Manmohan Singh Government’s arrogance of power goes beyond the brazen corruption that is happening right under the nose and with the knowledge of a Prime Minister who prides himself on his alleged integrity. The UPA regime has also been busy subverting the federal structure of the Constitution. It has let loose investigative agencies that are supposed to be impartial, on non-Congress State Governments. It is trying to harass and torment our State Governments and discriminating against them in financial matters in particular.

Last week’s meeting of the National Development Council, therefore, became a forum for leaders of non-Congress State Governments to express their anger against such discrimination. Tamil Nadu’s representative protested vigorously against the Centre’s discriminatory policies. The Congress Party’s partners in the UPA such as Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal had earlier complained about the absence of consultation on many matters such as sharing of Teesta waters withBangladesh.

Our Government in Madhya Pradesh is unable to maintain National Highways because the Centre’s Road Transport Ministry took away the power of highway repair from the State authorities. As a result, State Highways in various States are well maintained while National Highways are in a pathetic shape. I experienced this last evening while travelling from Bargarh to Sambalpur.

The case of Gujarat is too well known to bear repetition. The Centre has tried its best to make Narendra Modi’s Government dysfunctional. The outburst of protest at the NDC meeting caught the Prime Minister on the back-foot. The BJP will not allow the Centre’s sinister design to subvert the federal structure of our Constitution. We are confident that other non-Congress Governments will join us in this struggle.

Chairman, BJP Parliamentary Party Shri L.K. Advani on the eve of Jan Chetna Yatra

Press Statement issued by Chairman, BJP Parliamentary Party Shri L.K. Advani at
New Delhi on the eve of Jan Chetna Yatra on 10.10.2011.

Tomorrow, I start the Jan Chetna Yatra. I shall be travelling across the country in order to educate and mobilize public opinion on the issues of honest politics and good governance.

The mood in India today is one of anger about the quality of politics and the governance. This anger has arisen on account of the inadequacy of leadership provided by the Central Govt. and the complete decline of ethical politics pursued by the UPA. This has resulted in a general environment of cynicism affecting the credibility of India’s Parliamentary democracy and the politicians who man it. As one who has seen and participated actively in all general elections in India and having campaigned on several issues, my forthcoming yatra is intended to campaign on the issues of honest politics and good governance and convert the cynicism into enthusiastic nation building.

I believe that the best for India is yet to come. Our national potential has remained underutilized. The Indian society plagued by unsatisfactory politics and governance has not been able to utilize its full potential. Corruption today is adversely impacting our economy. The investment climate in the country has been disturbed. Time has come to raise the bar of accountability so that the systems which are so created act as a deterrent against the corrupt.

Civil Society Organizations in recent times have rendered a great national service by campaigning on the issue of probity. However, it is the political parties which are the essence and the strength of Parliamentary democracy. Therefore, I have decided to undertake this Yatra so that politics instead of being discredited should become inspirational for many people who should be attracted to join it. The best must now get attracted into politics since politics is the most important instrument of decision-making, governance and nation building.

Tackling Corruption

The efforts in the Yatra shall be to campaign pre-dominantly on the issue of corruption. We must be able to channelize this public anger into a constructive direction and lead to positive solutions. My party and I stand committed to the creation of an effective Lokpal. This should be an independent agency appointed by an independent mechanism and empowered to penalize corruption across the country. The NDA-State Governments have been in the forefront of legislating a law which provides for a citizens charter that makes it mandatory to render public service efficiently and effectively. Public servants are to be penalized in the event of the default. Similarly, it is the NDA Governments which have effectively legislated laws relating to confiscation of assets acquired out of corruption. We believe that no one is entitled to retain the profits of crime. Special courts have been set up in several NDA States to confiscate the assets acquired through acts of corruption. By this Yatra, we campaign for getting these major steps being replicated at the national level. We need to ensure that tenders beyond a certain threshold level are subject to mandatory e-tendering. We need to eliminate discretions and replace them with objectivity in the matter of allotment of governmental largesse.

JUDICIARY

Judicial reforms are the need of the hour. Judiciary in many cases is the ultimate arbiter of State and public action. The quality of judiciary must remain uncompromising. You need men of integrity, stature and quality to enter judiciary institutions. Judicial reforms must thus be aimed at judicial efficiency, elimination of arrears, and the need to appoint men of the highest level of integrity. In recent years, disturbing information have appeared in relation to some in the judicial institutions. The bar of accountability has to be raised. We have proposed a National Judicial Commission which shall deal with appointment of Judges to the higher judiciary and dealing with cases of complaints against Judges. The Yatra will endeavor to campaign on this issue.

ELECTORAL REFORMS

In the recent past, constitutional amendments have restricted the size of the Council of Ministers in the State. Defections have been substantially reduced. The Election Commission has done well to tackle the menace of booth capturing. However, criminalization of politics and the use of excessive money power in elections still ails our political system. These two challenges adversely impact the credibility of politics. Therefore, the need for taking steps in this direction is imminent. The Yatra will effectively campaign on this issue.

BLACK MONEY

Our revenue and penal laws have been too liberal in tackling the black money. Black money is present both domestically in land and trade transactions as also stashed in tax havens. The Govt. of India has been extremely slow in trying to eliminate this menace whereas several countries have been able to pressurize tax havens into making concessions with regard to disclosure of black money. The Govt. of India has not taken any pro-active steps in this direction. Estimates about the quantum of black money held in foreign bank accounts vary but the amount is believed to be huge. The Yatra will actively campaign to pressurize the Govt. to take effective steps to bring back the black money so that it can be used for building national assets. The names of those holding accounts in tax havens abroad and Swiss Banks should be publicly disclosed. I have reason to believe that recently disclosures have been made to the Govt. of India with regard to accounts held by Indians in one of the leading Swiss banks. I understand that the Income-tax Department has been asked to quietly deal with this issue and put a lid on the whole matter. The facts have been held back even from the Enforcement Directorate. I demand to know whether it is factually correct that the details of the accounts held in one of the Swiss banks have already been provided to the Govt. of India because of the disclosures made by a whistle blower and the names are not being made public to save embarrassment on account of a few selected individuals.
