Press Statement by Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, M.P. and National Spokesperson
25th June is remembered as the dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy. 36 years ago, the day of 25th June showed the dictatorial face of the Congress Party. On the same date again today, the most inhuman face of the Congress Party has came before the nation. It will not be stretching the case too far to say that today there is a situation of economic emergency in the country. Due to wrong economic policies of the UPA Govt., the unabated inflation has affected the villagers, the poor, farmers and the laborers as well as the middle classes very severely. On top of that, the decision by UPA Govt. to increase the price of diesel by 3 Rs., Kerosene by 2 Rs. and LPG by 50 Rs. will not only add to inflation further but will also deny two square meals to the common man. The Congress claim that its ‘hand’ is with the common man but the same ‘hand’ has today made the life of the common man miserable.
The Government says that it has no control over the prices of petroleum products. Then why does it convene meetings to discuss the same? Why are the prices of petroleum products increased? Congress led UPA Govt. is inflicting an injury on the common man by rising prices and by saying that it is a nominal increase, the Govt is adding insult to the injury. This shows the height of insensitivity of the Congress Govt.
From the statement made by the Finance Minister and the Petroleum Minister and from the justifications advanced by them, it appears that the Congress Governmentt is no longer a democratically elected Government but is actually acting like a private company. After all, one fails to understand the priorities of this Government- whether the interest of the common man or profits of the oil company.
The Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and the Petroleum Minister Mr. S. Jaipal Reddy are claiming that the prices of the petroleum products have been increased to offset the losses of the oil companies. The Ministers are concerned about the losses of the company but do not show any concern for the same common man in whose name they are today in power.
This decision of the Government will further add to inflation. The insensitivity of the Congress Government at the Centre becomes more glaring from the fact that it has increased the prices of kerosene oil, which is used by the very poor people, by 2 Rs/ liter, diesel by 3 Rs./ liter and LPG by 50 Rs./ per cylinder and it very shamelessly claimed that it is a very nominal increase.
This increase will not only disturb the household budget but will also lead to increase in prices of each and every food item.
The rise in prices of diesel will lead to increase of the cost of transportation, bus fare, higher agriculture input, higher cost of food grains, fruit and vegetables, higher cost of electricity, cement and houses.
This impractical decision of the Government will affect the prices of each and every commodity. 9.06 % rate of inflation for the month of May is likely to go beyond 10% now.
The insensitivity of the Congress Government becomes more evident from the fact that it is headed by an economist Prime Minister and on the other the mismanagement of the economy has made the common people suffer due to inflation.
Bharatiya Janata Party is opposing the anti-people decision of the Congress led UPA Govt today across the country in all district headquarters by organizing dharna-demonstrations. In these demonstrations, the participation of common people in large number indicates that there is wide spread anger among the people. BJP would like to caution the Government that it should stop playing with the life of common man. Congress has lost the moral right to claim itself to be a champion of common man.
BJP demands that the Government should immediately roll-back the increase in prices and provide relief to the common people.
